Abstract

The invention comprises funtuphyllamine, having the formula: <FORM:0948769/C2/1> together with a process for the isolation of compounds of the general formula: <FORM:0948769/C2/2> (wherein R represents a ketonic or b -hydroxylic group, and R1 an -NH2, -NHCH3 or -N(CH3)2 group) which includes the alkaloids dimethyl funtumafrine, methyl funtumafrine, dimethyl funtuphyllamine, methyl funtuphyllamine and funtuphyllamine, from the ground parts of plants of the genus Funtumia (Apocynaceae), species F. Africana, comprising the steps of (1) subjecting the said parts to solvent extraction, (2) agitating the resulting solution with acid, (3) separating the acid solution and (4) rendering it alkaline, (5) extracting the alkaloid bases with ether, benzene, chloroform, ethanol, or methanol and (6) separating the individual alkaloids thus obtained by chromatography. The invention is illustrated by 3 detailed examples. The alkaloids are of therapeutic interest as hypotensors and anti-inflammatory agents. Specification 900,572 is referred to.
