Abstract
316,359. Morton, A. Home-. May 7, 1928. Medicines for internal use.-Hormones having the same action as those extracted from the ovary and placenta are obtained from bile by extraction with ether, benzene, or chloroform. According to examples-(1) fresh bile to which animal charcoal has been added is evaporated to dryness and extracted with hot absolute alcohol, acetone is added, the solution poured off the precipitate produced, again evaporated, the residue extracted with ether or chloroform, and the extract so obtained is evaporated; (2) bile salts obtained from bile by extraction with alcohol in presence of charcoal, evaporating the filtrate, extracting the residue with water and again evaporating, are extracted with dry ether in a Soxhlet apparatus and the solution obtained evaporated; (3) inspissated bile is treated according to examples (1) and (2) ; (4) fresh bile is extracted repeatedly with ether, and the extracts obtained are united, concentrated, washed with water, dried with dehydrated Glauber's salt, evaporated to dryness and extracted with petroleum ether to leave the hormone as an insoluble residue.
