Abstract

A medicinal substance serving to reduce hyperglyc mia is obtained by treating yeast with picric acid, extracting the picrate of the active substance with dilute alcohol, precipitating it from the extract with strong alcohol, and treating the picrate so obtained with an alkaline substance, such as sodium phosphate or hydroxide, to set free the active substance. The process is carried out in the cold. Known processes are referred to according to which (1) onion is frozen with solid CO2, crushed, placed in boiling water, and the filtered solution treated with strong alcohol to precipitate an active substance; and (2) yeast is extracted with strong alcohol, the extract concentrated in vacuo, and an active substance precipitated by addition of ammonium sulphate.
