281,379. Davis, N. R., and Metropolitan-Vickers Electrical Co., Ltd. Aug. 31, 1926. Induction furnaces.-In a high-frequency induction furnace operating in a vacuum the crucible 19 is provided with a tubular chimney 23 extending beyond the end of the inductor 22 and of sufficient length to cause condensation of metallic vapour on its walls so as to prevent a glow discharge due to the presence of ionized vapour. Dimensions for a particular furnace and a general formula are stated in the Specification. The crucible is surrounded bv a silica tube 10 sealed at both ends and fitted with a glass cap 16 and a vacuum connection 18. The furnace may be used for melting platinum, copper, chromium, lead, tin, zinc, nickel, iron, and their alloys, employing a frequency of 10<6> cycles. The chimney may be fitted with a receiver to adapt the apparatus for distillation.
