Abstract

392,509. Discharge lamps. SIEMENS & HALSKE AKT.-GES., Siemensstadt, Berlin. Aug. 10, 1931, No. 22566. Convention date, Aug. 9, 1930. Void [Published under Sect. 91 of the Acts]. [Class 39 (i).] A metallic-vapour arc lamp, working on alternating current, is provided with electrodes 4, 5 of substantial mass and of refractory metal, e.g. tungsten, tantalum, molybdenum or niobium, between which the discharge passes when the. lamp is working under high pressure. For starting, when the lamp is in the lowpressure condition, incandescent electrodes, which may be in the form of spirals 2, 3, 3a of tungsten wire, are provided. The construction shown on the left side of the Figure is suitable for the employment of difficultly vaporizable metals solid at ordinary temperatures, e.g. cadmium or zinc, and comprises a metal case 12, with a condensed deposit 23 of the vaporizable metal, surrounding a pair of spirals 2, 3, which at starting can be raised to incandescence by current from the mains 24, 25. The part of the lamp surrounding the incandescent electrodes is provided with a heat-insulating layer 15 surrounded by a metallic shell 16. The construction shown on the right side of the Figure is suitable for the employment of mercury as the vaporizable metal, and comprises an annular shoulder 18 for the reception of the mercury. To start the lamp, the switch 27 is first closed in order to supply heating current to the spirals at each end of the tube ; the switch is then opened, whereupon an arc passes between the incandescent electrodes and subsequently jumps over to the main electrodes 4, 5, whereupon the incandescent electrodes become part of the heating resistance of the lamp, the two spirals 2, 3 in the left-hand construction being placed in parallel by closing the switch 32.
