Abstract
276,777. Pobjoy, D. R. June 30, 1926. Joint-making packing.-Interfitting components having different coefficients of expansion, e.g. a cylinder barrel and head, are locked together by a ring and nut, the ring being out of contact with the inner component and having a conical or taper face fitting on a complementary face on the outer component and having a flat face fitting against a nut screwed on the inner component. The cylinder head 1 is secured gas tight to its barrel 2 which has a lower coefficient of expansion, by screwing the barrel into the head, and tightening the lock nut 3 which forces the conical faced ring 4 against the conical face 6 on the head, the ring being larger than the barrel and out of contact with it. The greater expansion of the head then tends to force the threads on the head and nut 3 into closer contact with the threads on the barrel. The nut is provided with cooling fins.
