Abstract
582,123. Locking nuts. NOAD, R. B., and METROPOLITAN-VICKERS ELECTRICAL CO., Ltd. May 7,1941, No. 5956. [Class 89 (i)] [Also in Group XXIII] A device for locking nuts is described with reference to securing a gas turbine disc 1 on the hollow shaft 13 of a plant which includes an internal combustion gas generator 10 and a turbine type compressor all in coaxial alignment and the locking device being accessible only through the hollow shaft. The locking is effected through relatively soft metal plugs in radial holes in an intermediate member. The end 12 of the shaft of the turbine 1 has a splined connection 15 with a member secured to the hollow shaft 13 and the parts are held together by a bolt 26 screwing into the shaft at 24 and having radial holes containing plugs 32 of a metal such as copper, that are forced into engagement with serations 25, preferably longitudinal, by the coned end 31a of a locking screw 30. A key spanner 33 for engaging the hexagonal interior of the bolt 26 through the hollow shaft 13 has detent means, such as a spring pressed ball 35 for maintaining the bolt in engagement with the spanner. A box spanner with a similar detent may be used for engaging the head 29 of the screw 30. In a modification, the parts 12 and 14a have a dowelled engagement and the shaft 12 has a spigot extension to receive the nut that holds the parts in engagement, the spigot being bored and tapped to receive the screw 30 and provided with radial holes for the pins 32 that engage serrations on the nut. In a further modification, the spigot is not bored but has external threads and serrations and the part 14a has a tubular extension that screws on the spigot and has an external thread for a nut having an internally coned part to bear on the pins that are mounted in radial holes in the tubular extension.
