Abstract

497,366. Windscreen - cleaners ; securing wiper arms on shafts. OSHEI, W. E., and TRICO-FOLBERTH, Ltd. June 18, 1937, No. 17040. [Class 138 (i)] [Also in Group XXIV] The wiper arm is secured on the motor shaft by means of a sleeve on the arm and a split collar, tightening of a nut causing coacting inclined surfaces to tighten the collar on the shaft. As shown in Fig. 2, a sleeve 13 to which the wiper arm is pivoted has an inclined surface 15 co-operating with the inclined outer surface of a split collar 20 which is slipped over the end of the motor shaft 14. When a nut 17, formed with a recess 19 to receive the end of the shaft, is screwed into the sleeve 13, the collar 20 is moved axially and tightened on the shaft. The collar has a liner of harder metal and is held from rotation on the shaft by a key 22. The split collar and nut may be secured permanently on the wiper arm. In modifications, the inclined surfaces are formed on the collar and nut. In other modifications the collar is provided also with a tapered inner surface, co-operating with an inclined surface on the shaft. In another modification, the collar has an internal rib co-operating with a circumferential groove on the shaft. In Fig. 6 the collar 132 is formed of soft metal so that it binds on the tapered end of the shaft when the nut 17 is screwed in. It can be forced off the end of the shaft, when required, by screwing in a screw 34.
