490,959. Motor vehicle steering-gear; securing hand wheels on shafts. CLIFFORD COVERING CO., Ltd., and JOSEPH, S. C. April 24, 1937, No. 11807. [Class 79 (v)] [Also in Group XXIV] The steering hand wheel a is adjustable axially along its shaft c, being formed with a sleeve b the lower end of which engages splines on the shaft and is split at d for resiliency, the sleeve being tightened on the shaft by a hand-screw g passing through a loose collar f and adapted to exert pressure on the sleeve to secure the latter on the shaft in any desired position. The end of the screw preferably engages a recess in the sleeve to hold the collar always in position on the sleeve. An annular groove e in the sleeve increases its resiliency. A spring ring limits the outward movement of the sleeve along the shaft. A telescopic volute spring k covers the gap between the sleeve and a collar m fixed on the shaft c.
