Abstract

Locking nuts; over-tightening, preventing.-In a means for preventing overtightening and also for locking a nut, a groove is provided in the bottom face and contains a split tapped ring. The ring 2 is split at 5 and provided with a tapered recess 3 the end of which engages a pin 4 partly held in the body of the nut 1. If the ring is aranged so that the slit 5 is forward of the pin 4 having regard of the direction of rotation 6, as in Fig. 2, for tightening, then on overtightening the pin travels along the recess 3 and forces the ring 2 against the bolt. If however, the ring is reversed and the slit 5 is behind the pin 4 having regard to the direction of rotation, as in Fig. 3, then when the nut has been tightened on slacking back the pin travels along the recess 3 and tightens the ring on to the bolt. A hole 7 is provided through the nut so that a pin may be inserted for removing the nut from the bolt when it is used as a locking nut. In a modification the split ring may be formed integral with a thin hexagonal washer of the same size as the nut.
