Abstract

619,174. Bolts. ODDIE, BRADBURY, & CULL, Ltd., and TURNER, W. J. Nov. 25, 1946, No. 34855. [Class 89 (i)] Bolt, for replacing missing rivets &c., that cam be inserted from the nut side of the plates is formed hollow, and the head end is provided with a number of slots. This end is then closed in thus causing the bore to taper and the head to become small enough to pass through the hole in the plates. When the bolt is in position it is held against rotation by flats formed on the screwed end and an expander D, Fig. 3, is forced through the bore to reform the head B<1> to engage the plates. The expander is preferably inserted in the bore before the head is closed in. The other end of the bore is tapped to engage a screw. C that forces the expander through and has a plain end C<2> that prevents the bolt head from collapsing again. The expander may be integral with the screw C<1>. In a modification the bore is not tapped but has a counterbore F3, Fig. 5, and the expander G has a neck to receive a rubber &c. packing washer H and a head G<1> that fits the counterbore. The bolt is expanded by a tool K that screws on the bolt and is locked by the nut M, both being held against rotation by a handle K<1>. The expander is driven into place by a screw L the. end of which is hollowed to flange in the end of the bolt and prevent retraction of the expander.
