Abstract

564,529. Stud boxes. AIRCRAFT SCREW PRODUCTS CO., Inc. July 15, 1943, No. 11564. Convention date, Aug. 13, 1942. [Class 83 (iii)] A stud box comprises a stud-engaging member 22 split at 33 for bevel closing at 28 by relative axial movement of a chuck body 21 having a polygonal engagement at 29 with the upper end of the member 22 which abuts the lower end of the box 1 which has projections engaging recesses in the body 21. The box 1 is provided with a screw thread, in the embodiment shown, in the form of a helical wire insert, to receive a threaded rod 10 the end of which bears through an interposed plug 34 on the top of the stud. A nut 35 is retained on a shoulder 4 on the box 1 and is threaded to engage the chuck body 21. The box 1 is polygonal at 2 and engages a polygonal part 15 of a sleeve 14 bored at its upper end to a diameter that will receive the polygonal part 2 with clearance. A spring confined between the parts 35 and 14 maintains the latter in engagement with a handled cross-bar 12 in the upper part of the bar 10 by which the device is rotated. By depressing the sleeve 14 until the polygonal parts 15 and 2 disengage and then giving it a part rotation return of the sleeve is prevented and one or more lugs 18 on the sleeve are free of the cross-bar. The bar is then rotated to adjust the position of the lug 34 according to the length of the stud and the sleeve 14 is then released in such a position that the lugs 18 are just behind the cross-bar in the direction of screwing up. Resistance to screwing in the stud will then cause relative movement between the parts to tighten the chuck within the limits permitted by the engagement of the cross-bar. with the other side of the lugs 18. The rod 10 is threaded the same hand as the stud but the nut 35 has a thread of opposite hand in order that the chuck may be further tightened by this means when necessary to remove a tight stud. In a modification the flange 3 on the box 1 is threaded to receive the nut 35 which then has an internal flange at its lower side to take below a flange on the chuck body and in this case all the threads are of the same hand as'that of the stud.
