Abstract
692,041. Nuts and bolts; locking. EAKINS, A. H. July 3, 1951 [July 4, 1950], No. 16664/50. Class 89 (i) Relates to quick acting nut and bolt devices in which the bolt is inserted in the nut without rotation and is then engaged by rotating through a fraction of a turn and consists in the provision of a stop device that limits the relative rotation to this fractional turn after which the nut rotates with the bolt, the nut being externally threaded to screw into an outer nut during such continued rotatation. The bolt has flats 18 that pass the threads 19 in the nut 16 that has clearance at 17 for the bolt threads, and is threaded externally to fit the outer nut 10 that is flanged at 11 for anchoring to a part, such as the cowling support on an aircraft, and at 12 to engage with the stop device, which is formed from sheet metal with a flanged hole 24 to fit the bolt and with projections 28 on spring tongues 27 to engage formation 13 on the flange 12 and provide a lock against unintentional unscrewing of the parts. Spring tongues 26 engage cut-away parts in the end of the nut and screw to maintain the formations 28, 13 in engagement. When the bolt is passed axially into the nut 16 it passes also through the hole 24 in the stop device and the latter turns with the bolt as this is given its part turn to engage with the threads 19. When this engagement is completed further rotation relatively to the nut 16 is prevented by contact of lugs 25 with shoulders 22 and the bolt, nut and stop member all rotate together screwing into the outer nut until the required degree of tightening is effected; the lugs 25 engaging in the slots 20 and the projections 28 ratcheting over the formations 13. On unscrewing, the parts again all rotate together until the nut 16 reaches its initial position in the outer nut when further unscrewing is prevented by peened over threads in the outer nut. At this time the lugs 25 are free from the slots 20 and the bolt and stop member make a part turn together till the bolt disengages from the threads 19. A spring 30 is periferally mounted on the outer nut to secure at least a part ejection of the bolt at this stage. Inturned ends of the spring engage in corrugations 14 formed in the flange 11.
