Abstract

276,041. Denholm, T. D. March 22, 1926. Diaphragm pumps.-In a diaphragm pump a hollow plunger E is connected to the diaphragm A with lost motion so that during the first portion of each stroke only the plunger moves. The inner edge of the diaphragm is clamped between plates C, e, and the outer edge between chambers B, D. The plunger carries a lift valve F and is connected by rods g to a crosshead G carrying a double rack S which engages two oscillating toothed quadrants. The connection between the plunger and diaphragm comprises two rods j passing through the plates e, C and lugs k on the plunger. The rods are fixed to the plates C, e by collars l and nuts m and slide through the lugs k. The amount of lost motion between the plunger and diaphragm may be adjusted by nuts n on the rods. The pump may be used as a suction pump by delivering through an outlet U, or as a force pump by closing the outlet U and delivering through a port V. An air vessel W is arranged above the chamber B.
