Cylinders, mounting, liners for passages of, and cooling; frames. - Cylinder liners and waterjackets are both divided into two parts, their outer ends being rigidly fixed, while their inner adjacent ends are free to expand. The two parts A, A<1> of a liner are mounted, with a small intervening gap E, on flanges on the outer ends of water jackets C, C<1>, which are formed integral with the entablature, separated by columns 0 and united by bolts G which may pass through the bedplate of the engine. A belt H may surround the adjacent edges of the liner and be attached at a to, or be integral with, the upper jacket, water-, tight sliding joints being provided at c, d. This belt may contain water-cooled inlet and exhaust passages I, J. The entablature may be utilized as a reservoir for scavenging air by providing an enclosing plate K. The joint a may be replaced by a stuffing-box joint. The belt H may be omitted and the parts C, C<1> being extended and packed to form a gas tight joint between the parts A, A<1>.
