Cylinders, construction of, cooling, and arrangements of ports in.-Consists in a method of constructing large cylinders for two-stroke-cycle engines, both single and double acting. The single-acting cylinder, Fig. 1, consists of a cast piece A taking up the forces due to combustion and containing the inlet and exhaust passages a<2>, a<3>, Fig. 3, and mounted on the standards E. A jacket portion B, of simple pipe form, is secured to the part A by bolts F which secure the cover D and lie outside the cooling water space b<3>. A liner C is flanged at c so as to be held by the cover D in a recess in the part B, and is slidably centred in the part A. Scavenging air ports are shown at c' and exhaust ports at c<4>. Cooling water passes through an annular passage a' to the space surrounding the passages a<2>, a<3>. The liner may fit the upper part of the piece A, in which case bores would be provided for the cooling water. The parts A of several cylinders are joined together at the faces a<1> so as to form a rigid structure. in the doubleacting engine cylinder, Fig. 2, the piece A has jacket portions B<1>, B<2> at each end, and the liner is divided below the centre in an undulatory line, the ports C<4> for both ends of the cylinder being formed in the upper portion C<1>. In a modification, the middle pieces A may be provided with feet, in which case the standards E may be made correspondingly shorter.
