Abstract

Cylinders, construction of and cooling.-Expansion is permitted of the parts of the cylinder of large engines in each of which two pistons work by fixing the liner to the casing at the centre of its length only. The cylinder body comprises a bridge piece 12 which rests upon columns 10 and takes the weight of the cylinder; it also supports an entablature 14, in which the cylinder slides freely, which takes the lateral stresses and is surmounted by the exhaust belt 16 and the crosshead guides of the upper piston. The parts 12, 14, 16 form a cylinder jacket, the water entering at 24 and escaping at 32, after passing through the central casing 19 with a sliding packed joint at 28 and through channels 88 in the bars separating the exhaust ports in the liner. Leakage between the liner and casing is prevented by stuffing boxes 25, 30 and 31. Speci. fication 163,453, [Class 122 (iii), Steam engines, Kinds &c.], is referred to.
