Cylinders, liners and heads for, construction and mounting of, detecting leakage in, and cooling.-Flanges d<1> of steel liners are clamped between an aluminium head b and a cylinder block a forming the water jacket, which are mounted on, and retained by kng bolts h extending into, the crank-case e As shown in Fig. 1, shoulders on the liners are mounted on rings i which rest on, and may be attached by external flanges to, the crank-case, a sliding joint with the block a being comprised by rubber rings j. As shown in Fig. 5, the water-jacket rests on rings l, packings k and passages l<1> to detect leakage being provided. A tight joint is secured on each side of the flanges d<1> by aluminium washers g, but a slight clearance is left between the faces of the castings a, b so that any leakage may escape. The head is secured by studs f extending into bosses a<7> in the cylinder block which has webs a<3> extending round the liners. Aluminium tubes a<5>, b<5>, expanded to form watertight joints at the ends, are provided for the bolts h and water-ways between the barrel and head jackets are also lined by aluminium tubes.
