Frames and casings; cylinders, construction of and coolinp; engine constructions, independent of cycle.-The framing of a multicylinder Diesel or like engine is cast as an integral unit, serving as the engine casing, and comprising an apertured plate 10, from which the liners are suspended, webs 12, between the cylinders, and ends and sides 11. The liners are clamped by the separate heads 16 and guided by a plate 18, integral with the framing, a water-tight joint being formed by rings 20, the space 21 forming the water jacket; holes are formed in the webs 12 to allow the water to pass from one cylinder jacket to another and passages 31 connect the cylinder and head jackets. The bottoms of the webs 12 are thickened and made hollow and triangular in section. They have holes 23<1> for the holding-down bolts and carry the crank-shaft bearings. Hand holes 28 having covers are provided. An eight cylinder engine is described comprising two four-cylinder blocks. The framing may be of cast steel or iron. In the modification shown in Fig. 8 the engine block comprises eight cylinders arranged in two rows of four cylinders each disposed at an angle to one another. The plates 34, 35 from which the lines are suspended and the guideplates 45 are curved, the web plates are double, and a vertical partition 38 is cast integral with the structure. The cylinders are slightly staggered so that the big-ends of the connecting rods can be pivoted to the same crank-pin. The lower edges of the sides are of box section as shown at 58.
