Dynamos, driving. -In a modification of the tidal water power plant described in Specification 171,346 comprising a turbine driving an electric generator, the generator is of the asynchronous commutator type so that by varying the position of the brushes, the voltage and frequency may be maintained constant notwithstanding variations in the speed of driving turbine, and the phase compensating currents are supplied from a synchronous condenser operated at constant speed. The turbine a drives the generator j through gearing c, d. Phase compensation is effected and the frequency is determined by means of an over-excited synchronous machine r having an exciter c. The machine r is driven from the turbine at a constant speed through variable-ratio electric or hydraulic transmission p, g, or one machine may be common to a number of groups and may be driven by a constant speed motor of any kind.
