Oppositely - running rotor type ; driving and transmission mechanism, special applications of.-In a steam or gas turbine, of the axialflow type with oppositely running rotors, the driving medium is admitted through the bore of an inner rotor, and passes through a median radial passage to escape through the blades on both sides of the passage. The blades on the outer rotor are mounted on two-part liners and the outer rotor is not divided in an axial plane. The inner rotor a carrying blades c has a passage z for the driving fluid, and a second passage p cut axially through the rotor a to conduct the fluid to the blades. The last stage t may be a radial flow-stage. The rotors a, b, revolve the gear-wheels g, h respectively, and in opposite directions. The main driving wheel i is rotated directly by the wheel h and through the gearing k, l, by the wheel g. Fig. 4 shows a modification in which an initial radial-flow stage u is used. Fig. 6 shows an initial axial-flow stage shrouded by a ring v. In the form shown in Fig. 7 the outer rotor b has a second series of blades o alternating with fixed blades p on the casing q. Steam at an intermediate stage may be tapped off at r. The blades of the outer rotor are carried by two-part liners.
