Abstract
266,776. Salerni, P. M. Oct. 23, 1925. Razors of the kind having a thick-backed or wedge-section blade a to which a handle b is pivoted at or near the back edge of the blade to allow it to be turned towards either face of the blade are provided with a guard c pivotally mounted on the blade at c<1> and acted on by a spring-pressed ball d which tends resiliently to hold the guard centrally with respect to the blade edge. With the blade substantially in line with the handle for stropping &c. the guard is free to take this central position, Fig. 5, but when the blade is turned through approximately a right angle to either side for shaving a shoulder a<3> on a shaft a<2> rotated by the handle engages a pin c<3> on the guard and holds the guard displaced to a suitable shaving position, Fig. 6. The handle shown has a tubular part b<1> (which may contain grease or oil) slidably mounted on a member b<2> secured to a squared portion of shaft a<2> housed in the blade. Member b is urged towards the blade by a spring b3. When its end bears against the back of the blade, the blade is resiliently held in central position in line with the handle, Figs. 4, 5, and when the blade is turned through approximately a right angle member b bears against a face of the blade and holds it in shaving position, Fig. 6. The end of member b is inclined, or the guard may be non-centrally pivoted or resiliently held when the blade is in line with the handle, so that the guard is displaced different amounts according to the side to which the blade is turned, to vary the closeness of shave. The end of member b may be shaped to give a number of different angular adjustments by rotating it on member b<2> to one or other of a corresponding number of positions. When stropping or honing, the guard first contacts with the strop &c. and the edge of the blade is then brought into contact by pressure of the finger, Fig. 3. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 265,244.
