- Toall whom iitmay concern Be it known that we, Cmx'roN A. SCOTT and ALEXANDER G. HUG, citizens of the ping. And the narrow extension o'r'tang with the handle to which it is attached forms a means by which the blade can be held and turned from one side to the other .on the sharpening element. But the blades of safety razors, consisting as they usually do of thin strips of steel sharpened on one or more edges, have no natural guide correspending to they back of the ordinary razor blade, nor have they any means by which they may be held and manipulated in. the process of fitting for use when dulled. ()n object of our invention is to afford means by which such blades may be securely held in proper relation to the sharpening element during the various steps of honing, stropging and setting for use. The blade when eld thereby may readily be turned from side. to side to alternate the strokes on opposite sides of the edge, and it is positively held at, the proper angle to give the edges a uniform and correct bevel. And the pre determined angle is held during the stroke, no matter how careless or unskilled the operator. The invention also has for its objects .theprovision of means limiting the angle th-rdhjgh which the pivoted blade "holder may swing, so we ghting or otherwise control-lin \th'a position of the blade holder that it wil swing between the limits of m,ovement prforitled for it, the employment of, a roller strhcture or other means to define the angle at which the blade contacts with the sharpening elemenband which roller, whdn e1nployed, is pre'ferab'lyof sufficient weight to'swing the blade holder by gravity.
The invention has other features that will appear.
The principles of our invention are illustrated In the drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a top view of our improved device, both top and bottom being, however, substantially the same;
Fig. 2 is a side view of the same in operative position;
Figs. 3, 4L and 5 show modifications of the device.
Further describing our invention with reference to the drawings. in which like characters of reference denote like parts throughout-1 is ablade holder having the jaws 22. A recessed portion 3 provides clearance for one part of a razor blade, .while the front edges are closely brought together to receive the edge which is to be presented to the sharpening element. A slightly modified form of the device is shown in Fig, 3, in which the blade holding jaws and the backward extension on the blade holder a re formed in one piece and the extremities of the backwardly extended portion are offset upwardly and downwardly to form bearing points 9, there thus being formed another form of engaging means on the blade holder extending laterally of the holder at each side thereof to be engageable with a sharpening element sin'iultanemislv with either side of the blade and which will determine the angle of the blade holding jaws and take the place of the wheel 9. shown in the other figures. Having thus fully described our invention what. we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- 1.. In a device for sharpening razor blades; a handle. a plurality of arms spaced from each other and extending longitudinally therefrom, a blade holdingn ember pivoted between the arms having jaws forwardlyextended from the pivotal point and a' portion extended rcarwardlv from the pivotal point, and'a guiding device attached to and extended transversely in each direction from the rcarwardly extended portion.

In a device for sharpening razor blades; a handle, a pluralitypf arms spaced from each other and extended longitudinally therefrom, a blade holding member pivoted between the arms having jaws forwardly extended from the pivotal point and a portion extended rearwardly from the pivotal point, a guide wheel axled on the rearwardly extended portion adapted 'to overbalance the said jaws, and means for limiting the relative movement of the blade holding member and'the handle.

A device for holding a razor blade that is to be sharpened including a handle; a blade holder; a connection between the handle and blade holder affording an axis of swinging movement for the blade holder which is normally substantially fixed with respect to the handle, and which axis of movement is located with reference to the blade holder to have the blade edge that is to be sharpened disposed upon one side of said axis; and a roller structure on the blade holder upon the other side of said" axis and extending laterally of the holder ateach side thereof to be engageable with a sharpening element simultaneously with either side of the blade to define the angle of the blade to the sharpening element.
