Each sharpening member may comprise a pin slidably engaging a. slot formed in the guard plate and provided with an arm faced with leather or other suitable sharpening substance.
The slot may extend from near one end of the guard plate into a lug provided at the other end of the guard plate so that the sharpening member may be slid and turned into a position clear of the safety razor blade when the sharpening member is not in use.
Where the safety razor blade is double edged, the pin, arm and slot device may be duplicated, and the leather face and abrasive face on the plate may be duplicated, so that both edges may be sharpened simultaneously.
The hereinbefore stated object is attained by the means hereinafter described and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein:

For the sake'of clearness the drawing shows the parts larger than their natural size.
In the construction shown as applied by way of example to the well known kind of safety razor comprising a double edged blade I held in a temporarily curved state between a. backing plate 2 and a guard plate 3 by means of a screwthreaded post 4 on the backing plate 2 extending through apertures in the blade I and guard plate 3 and screwed into a handle 5, I provide in the guard plate 3 two slots 6 which are parallel with the edges of the blade I and extend through the guard plate 3. The slots 6 extend from near one end ofthe guardplate 3 into two lugs formed integral with theguard plate 3 and projecting from one end thereof. In each slot 6 there is a pin 8 which extends from the outer to the inner side of the guard plate 3 and is slidable in and guided by the slot 6. The pin 8 is provided with a head 9 at the outer side of the guard plate 3 and with an arm I I) at theinner side of the guard plate 3. The arm I0 is provided at its extremity with a projection adapted to slide along the toothed or untoothed edge I2 of the guard plate 3. One surface ofthe arm I!) has a piece I3 of leather let into it. One edge of the arm has a bevel I4 to facilitate its insertion between the blade I and the guard plate 3.
' In operation, the pin 8 normally occupies that part of the slot which is situated in the lug 'I and therefore lies beyond the end of the blade I and the arm I0 therefore lies alongside the end of the guard plate 3, see Figures 3 and 4. The pin 8 and arm I0 are also in an angular position where the arm I0 points away from the toothed or untoothed guard edge I2 of the guard plate 3. The pin 8 and arm I0 are therefore out of the way and do not interfere with the normal operations of shaving, blade changing etc. When it is desired to sharpen the blade I, it is not removed from the razor, but the handle 5 is turned to slacken it on the post 4 sufficiently to enable the arm It to pass between the guard plate 3 and the blade I. The arm I0 and pin 8 are then rotated until the arm I0 points in the reverse direction, whereupon the arm III is pushed between the guard plate 3 and the blade I, this operation being facilitated by the bevelled edge I4 of the arm III. The projection II then engages and cooperates with the guard edge I2 of the guard plate 3 to prevent further rotation. When both arms II) have been pushed into position, the index finger and thumb of one hand are applied to the extremities of the projections II whilst the handle 5 is held in the other hand, and the arms III are simultaneously slid backwards and forwards from end to end of the guard plate 3, see Figures 1 and 2, the pins 8 sliding in their slots 6 and, in conjunction with the projections II, guiding the arms III in parallel paths relative to the cutting edges of the blade I. The leather pieces I3 are thus caused to slide along the said edges in contact with the sides thereof and thereby strop the said edges. When the strapping is complete, the arms and pins are restored to the initial position shown in Figures 3 and 4, and the handle 5 is again screwed tight, the razor then being again ready for shaving. The extremities of the projection H may be curved and serrated for example as shown to enable a surer finger grip to be obtained thereon.
Instead of sliding the arms ill to and fro by means of the projections ll, they may be slid to and fro by means of the heads 9, which for the purpose of obtaining necessary finger grip thereon may be made longer then, shown in the drawing and be of different-shape from'that shown.
I claim:
1. Means for sharpening safety razor blades comprising a backing plate, a screw-threaded poston the backing plate,'a handle for screwing on to the said post, a guard plate. between the backing plate and the handle, parallel slots in the guard plate, pins slidable in the said slots, arms provided on the pins at the inner side of the guard plate, and means on the said arms for sharpening the safety razor blade when in situ on the backing plate, and means for sliding the arms and pins to and fro parallel with the cutting edges of the razor'blade.
2-. Means for sharpening safety razor blades,
comprising a backing plate for a safety razor blade, a screw-threaded post on the backing plate, a handle removably screwed on to the said post, a guard plate provided on the screw-threaded post between the backing plate and the handle and having its inner side opposed to the backing plate, guide slots in the guard plate arranged parallel with the guard edges of the guard plate, siid'e members arrangedyslidable in. the slots and rotatable at one end of the slots, sharpening arms on the said members, a sharpening substance on the arms and opposed to the backing plate for sliding on one side of and sharpening the cutting T edges of the safety razor blade when in situ between the backing plate and-the guard plate, andmeans connected to the said slide members and arms and projecting Outside the guard plate for sliding the said slide members and arms to and froand thereby sliding the sharpening subcomprising a backing plate, a screw-threaded post on the backing plate, a handle removably screwed on to the said post, a guard plate between the backing plate and the handle, parallel: guide slots in the guard plate, members slidabl'e in the said slots, arms provided on the said members at the inner side of the guard plate, projections on the said arms sliding on the guard edges of the guard plate, and sharpening means on the said arms for sliding in contact with one side of the cutting edges of the safety razor blade when in situon the backing plate.
3. Means for sharpening safety razor blades,

Means for sharpening safety razor blades, comprising a backing plate for 'a safety razor blade, a screw-threaded post provided on the backing plate, a handle removably screwed on to the said post, a guard plate removably mounted on. the said post between the backing, plate and the handle, lugs at one end of the guard plate, parallel slots in the guard plate and extending into the said lugs, finger-operable slides mounted on the guard plate and slidable in the said. slots, and sharpening means carried by the said slides, the said slides being rotatable in the slots at the lugs for turning them into a positionv where they are out of the way when not in use.
