T0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, HAROLD H. SIMMs,
new and useful Improvements in Razors;
and l do hereby declarethe following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this speciand to the reference-numerals marked thereon.
" 'llhe present invention relatesl to safety razors, the subject matter of this application having been divided from an application iiled by me on Aprill?, 1909, Serial No.
An object of this -invention is to provide a construction which will permit the blade to be thrown to a position away from the guard with but few manipulations on the part of the user, so that the blade may be sharpened.
To these and other ends the invention consists in certain improvements and combinations of parts all as will be hereinafter more fully described, the novel features being pointed ut in the claims at the end of the specification.
lln the drawings: Figure 1 is a transverse section of one embodiment of the invention; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section, and lFig. 3 is a side View showing the device adjusted for stropping.
In the illustrated embodiment of the invention there is provided a blade holder for ,.detachably securing a blade 1 which ma have two cutting edges. This .blade holder preferably comprises a supporting member or plate 2 curved or convexed on its under p'orting member, in this instance by a'plate 4 which coperates with the blade between the two edges of the latter, a screw 5 or other clamping device serving to hold the plate to` the supporting member.
rihe blade holder is preferably supported stance a longitudinally curved or concaved plate 6 formed lto fit the under surface of the plate 2 and carrying two guards 7 formed by notched longitudinal edges of the plate.
40 side so as to pass freely over a strop or other lllhe connection between the guard frame and the blade holder may be in the form of a pivot or hinge 8 arranged at one end of the holder and ofthe guard frame and adapting the blade holder to swing away from the guards, preferably about an axis extending transverse to the direction of the width of the blade so that both edges of the blade may be exposed for stropping or sharpening. rllhis construction permits the blade holder 'to lie' in a plane transverse to or at an angle to the plane of the guard frame, as
'shown in Fig. 3, being maintained inthis position by depending stop or projection 8a at the hinged end of the holder coperating with the under surface of the guard frame and limiting the movement of the blade away from the guards, and a spring latch 9 coperating with said stop or projection to retain the latter in engagement with the guard frame. The blade may be held in cooperative relation with the guards by a spring latch 10 formed on the other end of the guard frame to engage the free end of the blade holder.
The handle of the razor is preferably sevrcured to the guard frame between the two whichpreferably may be made either to ro-r tate on portion 11 or to remain rigid therewith. In this instance the inner end of the grip portion has a clutch portion 13 to coy' operate with a clutch portion 14 on the guard frame, a nut 15 working on the outer screw threaded end of the handle to force the grip endwise into engagement with clutch portion 14. During shaving the grip should be rigidly secured to the guard but during stropping or sharpening it is preferable that the grip rotate for when the handle and blade holder lie parallel, the blade will shift automatically to present another edge to `the strop at the beginning of each stroke. i
ln order that the bladev clamping means may be easily operated, the handle portion 11 is made hollow and receives a rotary shaft or stem 16 whichvis held against axial movement by a collar 17 at the inner end of the fhandle and a thumb piece 18 at the outer end of the handle. This stem serves as an operati-ng means for the blade clamping device and for this purpose has a noncircular end 19 adapted to enter a pocket in the screw 5 when the blade holder is moved into cooperative relation with the guard. It is preferred that the screw 5 be iournaled in the supporting plate Q and held against removal therefrom by a collar 20 so that the screw is not liable to be lost or mislaidl The shaving position of the parts are shown in Figs. l and 2 and if it is desired to sharpen the blade the blade holder with the blade is released from the latch 10 and swung to the position shown in Fig. 3 where the stop 8a engages latch 9 and holds the parts in this position, the handle grip 12 being released either previously or subsequently to the movement of the blade holder. If the razor now be brought to a Sharpener only one face of one of its edges will cooperate with the Sharpener when the razor ,is moved in one direction and one face of the other edge will be engaged on the movement of the razor in the other direction. The other faces of both edges may be sharpened by reversing the position of the blade in the holder. To remove the blade from its holder it is only necessary that Athe blade holder b e .swung back into cooperative relation with its guards. Then the clamping screw will be engaged by the end of the rotary stem which, if rotated, releases' the plate 4.
A safety razor constructed in accordance with this invention permits the blade holder to be moved quickly from coperative rela tion with its guard or guards in order that the blade may be sharpened in the holder which supports it during the shaving operation. The handle is so connected to the razor that it may loe utilized for effecting the automatic shifting of the blade at the end of each stroke, so that another edge is brought into engagement with the sharpener. This handle also carries means which facilitates the removal of the blade from the holder or its reversal within said holder and the clamping means is so arranged that both the upper and the under surface of the blade holder is smooth for. shaving or stropping.
I claim as my invention:
