RAZOR-STROPPER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 777,667, dated December 20, 1904.

To all, whom, it may concern:

Be itknown that I, ALLIsoN HOWARD FLEM- ING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fairmont, in the county of Marion and State of West Virginia, have invented a new and useful Razor-Stropper, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to devices of that class employed for stropping razors, and especially razor-blades of the safety type, where in the blades are placed in suitable holders, the blades being generally removed when stropping is necessary.

The principal object of the present invention is to provide an attachment to be used in connection with a well-known form of razorstropper, the attachment being, of such nature as to form a holder or support for a razorblade of a type different from that which the razor-stropper is intended to receive.

A still further object of the invention is to provide a novel form of clamping device for two-edged razor-blades.

With these and other objects in view, as will more fully hereinafter appear, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the ap pended claim, it being understood that various changes in the form, .proportions, size, and minor details of the structure may be made without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a razor-stropper, illustrating a blade-clamp constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a similar view illustrating the blade-clamp partly open. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional elevation of the clamp with the blade in position.

Similar characters of reference are employed to indicate corresponding parts throughout the several figures of the drawings.

The razor-stropper illustrated in Fig. 1 is of a well-known construction and comprises a base-plate a, having upturned edge portions forming linger-holds 7). Near the front end of the blade is a segmental rack c, with which en-- gages a pinion (Z, carried on a pivotally mounted arm 0, the latter having at its outer end an approximately U-shaped clip f for the reception of the heel of the razor-blade. stropp'ers are intended principally to be used in connection with blades of safety-razors, where the heel oi? the blade is thickened, the blade being pushed endwise into the clip and securely held thereby during the stropping operation. These stroppers, further, cannot be used except in connection with a razorblade of the two-edge type.

There is at the present time on the market a two-edge razor-blade of the character shown in Figs. 2 and 3, this blade being formed of a very thin strip of steel 7, the longer edges of s which are sharpened, and at a point midway oi the width of the blade are arranged a number of openings through which are passed pins, studs, or other devices for the purpose of securing the blade in position while shaving.

It is the principal object of the present in vention to provide a clamp or holder into which this blade may be placed and the clamp or holder then inserted in the clip f, after which the razor-stropper may be used in the ordinary manner.

The blade-clamp comprises two plates 1 and 2, formed of metal or other material, and are connected at one end by a hinge 3; Projecting from the inner face of the plate 2 is a series of studs 4 equal in number to the number of openings in the blade, and in the opposite plate 1 are arranged openings 5 for the reception of the ends of said studs. The outer face of each of the plates is provided with a longitudinal groove 6, said grooves receiving the edges of the holding-clip f.

In using the device the clamp is opened to about the position shown in Fig. 2, and the blade r is placed over the projecting studs 4. The plate 1 is then folded down until the ends of the studs are inserted in the openings 5, and then, the plates being held clamped together by the fingers, said clamp is pushed endwise into the holding-clip f, the edges of the latter entering the grooves 6. The blade will then be securely held and may be stropped by manipulating the stropping device in the usual manner.

These Having thus described the invention, What is claimed is A razor-blade clamp for use in connection With a stropping device, said clamp comprising a pair of plates, hinged together at one end, one of the plates being provided With a plurality of studs for engagement with openings in the blade and the other plate having openings for the reception of said studs, the
