Description

PATENTED MAY 12, 1908.
J. F. MEDBERY. DEVICE FOR STROPPING THE BLADES OF SAFETY RAZORS.
APPLIOATION FILED FEB.12,1907.
animate z witnmeo JAMES FRANCIS MEDBERY, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA.
DEVICE FOR STROPPING THE BLADES OF SAFETY-RAZORS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 12, 1908.
Application filed February 12, 1907. Serial No. 356,954.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMEs FRANoIs MED- BERY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Washington, District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Strop ing the Blades of Safet -Raz0rs, of which t e following is a speci cation. 7
My invention relates to devices for holdin razor blades while honing, stropping, or 0t 'erwise sharpening the same, and particularly to a holder which is designed for the cutting blades of the Gillette and other safety razors of a similar type.
The object of the invention is to provide a holder which is very simple in construction and cheap to manufacture, and one in which the blade may be clamped and both edges of the blade honed or stro ped without removing the same from the older.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in certain constructions, combinations and arrangement of parts the preferred form of which will be first described in connection with the accompanying drawing and then the invention particularly pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the drawing wherein the same part is designated by the same reference numeral wherever it occurs, Figure 1 is a pers ective View showing the holder with a b ade of the Gillette type of safety razor clamped therein. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the holder in partly open position and Fig. 3 is a cross section of Fig. 1, through the clam ing portion of the holder.
1 esignates one portion of the handle and 2 the other portion, the two arts being hinged together by means of the hinge 3. These parts are shaped to form convenient handles, and near the hinge portion the part 1 is provided with holes 4 which are the same distance apart and correspondingly arranged to the holes 5 in the blade 6 of a razor of the Gillette type. On the handle portion 2 I provide projections 7 which correspond with the holes 4 and are adapted to enter the holes. These projections, when the blade 6 is in position, pass through the openings 5 of the blade and hold the blade in position. In the form of my invention shown these projections are formed by striking up the body of the metal of the handle 2 and consequently forming on the under side of the handle depressions 8.
From the above description of my invention it will be seen that when a blade 6 provided with the holes 5 is placed in position over the projections 7 of the handle portion 2, that the handle portion 1 may be swung over so that the projections will pass through the holes 5 in the blade and the holes 4 in the other handle portion, and thus clamp the blade securely in position between the handles 1 and 2. The blade may now be stropped first on one edge and then on the other without the necessity of removing the same from the handle.
From the above description it will be seen that my holder is composed of but two parts hinged together, and that the parts are so formed that each part can be struck from a blank at a single operation.
While I have described what I believe to be the preferred form of my invention, I desire to have it understood that many changes may be made in the form, construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of my invention.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A holder for holding safety-razor blades while sharpening the same, consisting of a pair of sheet metal plates hinged together at their outer ends, and having handle-shaped inner ends, one of said plates being provided with openings and the other with registering projections whereby a double edged cutting lade having openings therethrough will be clamped between said members by the grasp of the hand on the handle portion of'the plates, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
