Abstract

Cam- and leveractuated pumps; stroke, varying.-In a pump of the type wherein a plunger is actuated by a cam against a spring, such as a pump for spraying oil into an internal - combustion engine, leakage of oil past the plunger 1 is prevented by the provision of an air chamber 26 wherein air is compressed at each stroke of the lever 23 actuated by the cam 35. An exit 28 provided with a suitable check valve may be arranged to return any leakage oil to the supply. Inlet valves 3 and outlet valves 5 - are provided for the pump as shown, and a relief valve 7. The cam lever 23 actuates the pump through a roller 10 adjusted by a centrifugal governor 19 through a linkage 16, so as to reduce the stroke of the pump as the speed increases. Hand operating gear (not shown) for use at starting comprises an eccentric pin engaging the plunger cap 9 and rotated by a handle. In order to vary the timing of the pump within limits without affecting its stroke, the pivot 30 of the lever 23 is mounted in a block 31 which is adjustable by means of a screw 38.
