Abstract

445,004. Fuel - injection pumps. DESCHAMPS, D. J., 6378, Clayton Road, St. Louis, Missouri, U.S.A. Aug. 15, 1935, No. 22978. [Class 102 (i)] [See also Group XXVII] In a fuel-injection pump for an internalcombustion engine a shoulder 23 on a plunger 3 forms the operative surface and controls the suction port. The latter comprises a groove 16 in the barrel communicating by passages 15 with a groove 11 in the casing. When the groove 16 is covered by the plunger discharge takes place through a passage 19 and a valve 35 until a relief groove 26 in the plunger communicates with a relief groove 28 in a bush 27 communicating by passages 29 with the suction chamber 8. The groove 26 communicates with the compression space 17 by means of an axial passage 24 and a port 25 in the plunger. The timing of relief is adjusted by means of a nut 31 carrying a pinion 32 which engages with a rack. The pump shown is adapted for a two-stroke cycle engine and has two barrels acting alternately, the pump being driven at half engine speed by an overhead cam-shaft. As shown in Fig. 3, the suction passage 13 communicates with passages 9 leading to the pump barrels. One barrel can be put out of action by closing the corresponding passage 9 by means of a plug valve 12. Air can be discharged at starting by removing a plug 10a.
