Arc lamps. - To protect the base and the stem seal of gas-filled lamp bulbs from currents of hot gas, the stem tube 7 is open at its inner end and the pinch or seal 6 is formed at a distance from this end so as to form a pocket adapted to trap and hold a quiescent layer of gas that acts as a heat insulator. The open end of the tube may be flared out to form a flange or shield 10. An exhaust tube 8 may be fused within the stem tube, as described in Specification 147,293, [Class 39 (ii), Electric lamps, Incandescent], and the device may be applied to enclosed arc lamps, for example of the kind described in Specification 12995/15.
