Abstract

261,307. Hellstrand, E. A. July 8, 1926. Windscreens.-In order to prevent strains due to the lateral rocking of the supporting pillars of a vehicle wind-screen being transmitted to the screen itself and to avoid the provision of a heavy screen frame which would increase the obstruction to the driver's view caused bv the pillars, the screen 4 is pivoted directly to the upper ends of the pillars 2 so as to lie in a plane in advance of the pillars with the vertical members of the screen frame 7 situated immediately in front of the pillars. Preferably, the screen pivot is constituted by a transverse rod 6 extending between forwardly projecting lugs 3 on the upper ends of the pillars. The screen frame 7 is of light construction and is surrounded on its lower and vertical edges with a single or separate draught excluding strips 10, 12 co-operating with the scuttle 9 and pillars 2 respectively. An additional rubber or like strip 8 is arranged on the scuttle to contact with the inner side of the screen frame. When the screen comprises two panels arranged to form a V, draught excluding strips are also provided at the junction of the meeting vertical edges, and an additional central supporting pillar may also be incorporated. The side panels 13 are attached to the pillars 2 by means of tubular hinge members 20, Fig. 5, having flanges 21 to which the side screen frames 19 may be detachably bolted. In addition to or instead of the bolts 22 and flanges 21 the edges of the screen frames may be provided with dovetails 23 engaging corresponding grooves 24 in the hinge members 20, thus allowing the screens to be removed by a vertical sliding movement relative to the pillars.
