Abstract
498,671. Vehicle bodies. PRESSED STEEL CO., Ltd., and SWALLOW, W. June 11, 1937, No. 16227. [Class 108 (i)] A self-supporting road vehicle body includes two side wall structures each composed of inner and outer complementary panels formed with openings the margins of which are flanged and secured together to provide a truss-type girder of closed section, the side wall structures extending at least between the wheel-axles or equivalent supporting means so that a separate chassis frame is not required. Figs. 2, 3 show outer and inner panels respectively which when secured together form one side of the vehicle which is adapted to be connected to the other side, at the bottom by lower transverse tubular members, and at the top by a roof panel which may embody a sliding roof, and which may be composed of inner and outer panels similar to the sides or may comprise a one-piece stamping extending from the rear end of the body over the roof and down to the cowl, and including the windscreen and rear-view window openings. The outer panel 16, which may consist of a plurality of stampings welded together, is formed with door and window openings 17, 18, 19 and extends forwardly at 20 to serve as one portion of an engine housing, and rearwardly is formed with a wheel-housing depression 21. In effect, the panel 16 forms a truss-type girder constituted by the threshold portion 22, front, centre, and rear posts 23, 24, 25, rear quarter 26, and roof-header 27, each part being of inwardly-facing channel-section and formed with flanges lying parallel with the plane of the panel. The general configuration of the inner panel 36 is similar to that of the outer panel. In the wheel-housing region, however, the panel 36 is cut away at 47, 48 to decrease weight leaving a channel-section strut 49 and horizontal strut 58 flanged for direct securement to the wheel-housing portion 21 of the outer panel. The forward part 50 of the panel 36 is also formed with holes 51. The panels may be welded, riveted, or bolted together.
