Abstract

Boat-lowering cradles.-In an arrangement for facilitating the lowering of ships' life-boats, each boat is provided with a pair of skates 14 consisting of a curved angle iron secured to the boat at gunwale and keel by fastenings 16, 15. The skates are located on runners in grooves arranged in a structure 17 inclined outboard, and when released from the gripe gear, the weight of the boat swings the davit outboard and the skates keep the boat away from the ship's side during the subsequent lowering operation. The davits may be arranged to swing in when free from the weight of the boat either by inclining the sockets inwardly, or by supporting the davits on helical surfaces.
