Abstract

Vacuum closures; lever lids.-Closures for jars and other containers for foods comprise a biting ridge 14, Fig. 3, surrounding the mouth of the container, a similar ridge 18 on the cap or cover and disposed with its apex substantially over the ridge 14, and a yielding sealing ring 15 adapted to be compressed between the ridges. Adjacent the ridges, annular hollows are formed in the cap and container to provide space for the deformation of the sealing ring, and to locate the ridges correctly, a downwardly extending cylindrical portion 17 of the cap engages a cylindrical portion of the neck 12 of the container. As shown, the sealing ring is of angular section and its downwardly extending portion is utilized to form a tight joint between the central portion 17 of the cap and the neck 12 but when a lever lid ' is employed, a flat ring 28, Fig. 4, may be used and the lid itself makes a tight joint with the neck 22.
