Cylinders receiving liquid fuel. - In an engine in which a cooling jacket 6, around the combustion chamber, may be placed in series or parallel with a liquid conduit by operation of a valve 13, a hole 17 is provided through April 15, 1925, [Convention date]. which the jacket is emptied by the steam formed when the valve 13 closes the jacket 6. The cylinder jacket 2 communicates with the jacket 6 by a series of holes 3 and in alignment with one of these holes 3 is the conduit 11 leading to a jacket 9 for the upper portion of the cylinder head. The valve 13 is in the form of a screw plunger and is arranged so that in its extreme positions one of the passages 12, 16 is closed. In the modification shown in Fig. 4 an annular head jacket, which is not in direct communication with the cylinder jacket, is connected by passages 21, 22 to a union 24 united to the cooling liquid conduits at 25, 26. The passage 22 is closed by an extension 29 on a valve 27, which may be rotated to open the passage 22 and close direct communication between the connections 25, 26; the passage 21 is permanently open.
