Starting.-In an engine having a stepped cylinder and piston, the annular space formed between the small diameter piston part and the enlarged cylinder part is used with highly-compressed air for starting; the stepped cylinder, the crank case 2 and the bed plate 1 are cast together. At starting, the high-pressure air after expansion leaves the cylinder through the terminal ports 10 and the non-return valve 14; during normal running the valve 15 is opened.
