Alternating-current motors; pole-pieces; cores.-A synchronous-induction motor provided with a secondary member having salient poles has the tips of the poles stepped to produce a polar salient which decreases from starting to synchronous conditions. The arrangement is such that between the inactive and active iron forming the salient poles, areas exist which are of sufficiently low reluctance to carry the flux at starting but are of sufficiently high reluctance to be free of flux during synchronous running. As shown, a slotted laminated core is cut away at B to form the salient poles A, the teeth 16, 17 at the pole-tips being stepped to different depths, or in a modification they can be stepped to equal depths. The polar salient during starting conditions is represented by the angle A and at synchronism by the angle C, the angle D representing the inactive iron during synchronous running.
