Coking processes; producers. - Apparatus for the gasification and distillation of powdered fuel held in a state of suspension by a gas current ascending a shaft flared upwardly is provided with a grate arranged below the lower end of the shaft for receiving fuel particles. The tapered shaft 1 is provided with fuel-feeding means 3, and the grate 6 upon which a fire is maintained for starting purposes is arranged in a chamber 5. A blower or pump 13 supplies air to a chamber 2, which air may be directed over and through the grate by hinged flaps 7a before passing into the shaft. A member 10 is employed for distributing the air uniformly over the cross section of the shaft.
