Abstract
240,682. Fornaca, G. Dec. 19, 1924. Starting prime-movers.-An internal-combustion engine is started by an electric motor 9, the pinior. 13 of which is moved by a solenoid 7 into engagement with the rim 14 of the engine to be started, while the motor 9 is fed through a resistance 10 so as to rotate at a slow speed, the resistance 10 being short-circuited when the pinion and rim mesh, and finally when the engine is started the solenoid 7 is de-energized. Closure of a double-pole switch 6 completes two circuits, one from the battery 1 through the armature 4 of a battery-charging dynamo, the switch 6 and solenoid 7 to earth M<2>, the other from the battery through the resistance 10 and armature 9 to earth M<3>. When pinion 13 and rim 14 mesh, switch 19 is closed and short-circuits the resistance 10 so that the motor runs at full speed. When the engine has started the dynamo 4 excites and its cut-out 5 closes, thereby shorting the solenoid 7 between earths M<2>, M<1>, so that the pinion is retracted by a spring 17 even though the switch 6 remains closed, and the solenoid cannot be reenergized as long as the cut-out 5 remains closed. The pinion 13 is carried by a shaft 12 slidably keyed within the hollow armature shaft 11, a compression spring 18 being interposed between the shaft 12 and the core of the solenoid 7.
