Abstract

Propelling, steering, and manoeuvring by screw propellers; driving- arrangements for screw propellers.-A bow propeller for manoeuvring mounted on a transverse axis is bodily movable on a longitudinal axis of the ship by a sleeve attached to the hub and encircling the driving shaft. The propeller is supported in the cross tunnel 11 by a gear box 12 which is carried by a tubular member 13, Fig. 2, enclosing a driving shaft 21. Rotation of the tube changes the position of the propeller for steering and is effected from the main engine 22 through chain gear 26, intermediate shaft 25, variable friction drive 30, 31, and worm gear 28, 32. The propeller 39, Fig. 4 and a bevel wheel 38 secured thereto rotate on an arm 42 of a planet carrier 34 in the gear box 12. The main shaft 21 has a bevel wheel which engages the intermediate wheels 36 which engage in turn the bevel 38. The friction clutch 30, 31 and the main clutch 23 are both adapted to be controlled from the bridge.
