Abstract

216.273. Robinson. J. March 28, 1923. Driving arrangements for screw propellers ; rudders.-In motor boats adapted also to run on land, the engine shaft is extended forward to drive a transverse road wheel shaft which is situated forward of the centre of gravity of the boat. A rear disc whe,el is utilized as a rudder. The. forward wheels b are mounted on a shaft c which passes through stuffing boxes d and is geared to a. shaft f which is coupled to a forward extension of the shaft of the motor e by a clutch and gear box. The engine is also connected by a clutch with the propeller shaft z. The rear wheel l is journalled in a fork member m on a vertical shaft n which is connected by levers r, u with a nut s on the steering shaft t. The rudder shaft n may be slidably mounted under spring control for absorbing shocks. The wheel l has disc sides.
