Making wafer biscuits.-wafer and like baking- plates are provided with a locking-device which allows the upper plate to lift to liberate the steam evolved during the initial baking and then closes and locks the plates for the final baking. The lower plate 3 is provided with a bearing 4 for the locking-bolt 5, relatively revoluble cam-faced washers 8, 11 being interposed between the bearing 4 and a star-wheel 9 revoluble on the bolt 5, the washer 11 being revoluble with the wheel 9. The bolt 5 is provided with a T- or L-shaped locking-head 6 co-operating with a slot 7 in an extension of the upper plate 1. A star-wheel 10, slidable on and rotatable with the bolt 5, is secured thereon by a washer 15 and nut 16. A pair of stops are arranged on the roller rail 12, one of which contacts with and rotates the wheel 9 and consequently reduces the combined effective thickness of the washers 8, 11 thereby allowing a slight upward movement of the bolt 5 in the bearing 4. The other stop contacts with the starwheel 10 and rotates the bolt 5 until its head 6 lies in the unlocked position. The iron 1 is raised by the usual cam track and roller, the baked wafer is removed, batter introduced and the iron 1 is lowered after which another pair of stops are encountered. One stop rotates the wheel 10 and bolt-head 6 into the locked position, but owing to the relative disposition of the washers 8, 11 the iron 1 may lift slightly for the discharge of steam until the wheel 9 engages the other stop and the irons 1, 3 are then firmly closed and locked.
