Discharging.-The head of a pusher ram for discharging horizontal coke ovens is constructed with a projection which engages that portion of the charge offering the greatest resistance, i.e. the lower part, before the remainder of the head contacts with the coke. As shown, the ram head 20 is carried by a motor-operated bar 15 mounted on a wheeled carriage 12 and is formed, at its lower part, with a projecting portion 23 having a vertical face 24 which, at the commencement of the discharging operation exerts pressure on the bottom layer of coke in the oven 10 before the main surface 25 of the head 20 engages the upper parts of the charge. Fig. 3 shows a modification in which the head 20 is formed, in addition to the projection 23, with further projections 31, 32, 33 arranged in steps. In each case, there is pivoted to the lower part of the projection 23 a counter weighted plate 26 which is so arranged that it can pivot forwardly only and so ride over any loose coke during withdrawal of the pusher.
