Abstract

Retorts. - In the low-temperature coking of fuels, the charge is packed closely in the retort or oven by a short stroke or jigging motion of one or more surfaces against which the fuel lies, together with, if desired, the application of pressure. In one form, Figs. 1 and 2, a tapered plate 2 is moved up and down by holders 3 at the top of the retort 1. In Figs. 4 and 6 a tapered plate 7 is arranged at one side and moved horizontally by mechanism 8. Movable lateral pieces 9 are used to compress the fuel. The plates 2 and 7 may be withdrawn to allow the distillates to escape.
