Abstract

496,187. Coke-oven doors. WILPUTTE, L. N. May 9, 1938, No. 13770. Convention date, June 12, 1937. [Class 123 (i)] [Also in Group XII] A self - sealing cokeoven door comprises a flexible sealing strip B which engages with a sealing surface E<1> of the door frame member E, and a rigid outer door section A, a number of adjustable connections being provided between the outer section and the sealing strip each comprising wedges I, J, which by longitudinal adjustments effect relative movement between the adjacent parts of the outer section and sealing strip. The door includes a plug section C through which passes a girder C<4> welded to the bottom casting C<1>, and connected to the sealing member B by a plate G, and the weight of the door is supported by a narrow projection A<4> which extends between the side walls of a guideway and an upper projection A<5> which bears on a surface E<5> of the door frame member. The adjusting connections between the sealing strip and the door section A each comprise a member H connected by a pin H<3> and plate H<4> to the sealing strip B, the member H having a slot H<1> into which pass the wedges I, J which bear against parts K, K<1> welded to the door section A. By loosening one wedge, and driving home the other, the distance between the parts A and B may be adjusted while still maintaining a rigid connection. The locking bars L engage hooks E<10> on the door frame, and the sealing pressure is due to springs M each acting on its locking bar through a rocking member N having a pivot shaft N<1> supported by the door section A, and being hinged to the yoke portion L<1> of the bar. An uprising part N<2> of the lever N acts against the inner side of the yoke L <1>, and the portions N<3> act against the outer sides of projections L<2>, and cause the locking bar to be moved bodily towards or away from the door by clockwise or anticlockwise movement of the lever N. A door-operating machine lifts the lever N before the door-lifting device engages the brackets NA, NB. Detachable connections between the door frame member E and back stays d are described in Specification 468,276. The operation of the chuck door Q is described in Specification 495,172, [Group XII].
