Retors. - A gas retort b is provided with a plate a which forms a barrier for the coal charged into the retort, and is attached to a rod c so that it can either be pushed into the retort and held there by a lug g coacting with the door e, or pulled back against the door during the carbonizing period. A tapered member h when the plate is withdrawn from the retort closes a corresponding tapered hole d in the door. This arrangement avoids loss of gas when charging the retort, the gas evolved passing round the plate to the outlet i. Specifications 14536/01 and 844/11 are referred to.
