Abstract

295,461. Turner, C. May 31, 1927. Discharging. - The charge in a vertical retort for lowtemperature carbonization is supported by a plurality of intermeshing vertical screws which also constitute a discharge device for the residual coke. The screws may be either rotated or stationary, the pitch, in the latter case, being such that the coke slides down the surfaces of the stationary screws. As shown in vertical section, the retort a is provided with five screws mounted on vertical shafts g which extend downwardly through a spider f and glands h and are connected by gearing to a driving means. Superheated steam is supplied through the pipe k and central perforated hood i, while, in the gas-offtake l, is arranged a valve m automatically opened at intervals by a device which operates when a predetermined pressure is reached within the retort.
