"PATENT. OFFICE COKE OYEN LEVELER DOOR Heinrich Koppers, Essen, Germany, assignor, by mesne assignments, to Koppers Company, Pittsburgh, Pa., a corporation of Delaware Application April 1, 1938, Serial No. 199,344 In Germany April 3, 1937 2 Claims.
The present invention relates to doors for horizontal chamber or retort ovensfor the production of gas and coke and more'particularly to those coke oven doors which are provided with a closable opening through which the so-called leveling beam may be travelled-into the coking chamber.
In order to level the coal or other fuel charged into the coking chamber so that a gas collecting space is formed along the whole length of the oven in the upper part of the chamber to withdraw the distillation gases, the leveling beam is usually made use of. This beam has substantially the same length as the chamber; It is pushed into the chamber through an opening provided in the chamber door and then moved forwards and backwards several times, until the surface of the coal charge in the chamber has been leveled to the necessary extent. The opening provided in the chamber door through which the leveling beam is introduced into the chamber, is provided with suitable closure means, for instance a lid or flap carried by a hinge.
The leveling hole lid is impinged on'its inner; side by the distillation gases and vapours. Thereby, condensations of tarry constituents may be formed on the lid and on the sealing face of the doors against which the rim of the lid fits tight. For the purpose of removing the deposits. from the inside of the lid and from the sealing face of the door, much manual work has to be performed. t The main object of my present invention, now: consists in the provision of an improved design for the said leveling hole lids or flaps of coke:

The coking chamber of the coke oven shown in Figure -1 has been marked l on the drawings." The chamber l is formed by the side walls, the top-2 and the bottom 3 built of refractory material. The door 4 is held in closed position by the latch bars 6 or other suitable means. After loosening the latch bar 6, the
door-may be extracted from the chamber opening 1 by aslight lifting and a. subsequent'withdrawing in the direction of arrow 1 which for instance happens if the chamber is to-be discharged.
In order to be able to fill the chamber I with the fuel to be carbonized, charging holes "are arranged in the oven-roof. Forsimplicity,.the charging holeshave, however, not been shown on the drawings. When the fuel, for instance finely grained coal, ischarged through the charging holes into the chamber, cones reaching up to the top of chamber l'are finally formed on the top of the massof charged in coal. These so-called filling cones must be done away with so that the gases and vapours developed during the carbonization process; may pass withoutany trouble into the ascension pipe which is arranged either at the one chamber end, in the middle of the cham-' ber, or at any other suitable place in the roof 2. The, surface of the chamber charge is usually leveled by the means of a leveling beam which is introduced from the side into the oven chamber." A free space, being termed the gas collecting space, is formed along the whole length of the oven in the; upper part of the chamber by the backward and forward movement of the leveling beam. "I'heleveling beam is carried ona framing, arranged in most cases in such a manner that it travels in front of the oven. This leveling beam is essentially of the same length as the chamber so that it can remove all the coal from the gas collecting space extending over the length of th oven chamber.

The leveling hole closure consists of a steel An opening 8 has been provided above the coke lid I8 which on its inner side is fitted with projections II holding a refractory liner I2. The leveling hole 8 is surrounded by a door casing I3, which is suitably afiixed to-the door frame 4' for the door body 4.
At the upper end, the lid I8 is equipped with two lateral carrying-pins I4, which are engaged by the carrying levers I5. The other end of the carrying lever I5 is fixed to a shaft I6 which is supported in eyes of supports I? provided on the leveling hole door casing I3,
Furthermore, the operating lever I8 is fastened to the shaft I6 to manipulate the leveling hole lid. The lever I8 further engages a pin I9 which is pivotally movable in I8 and which, through bearings 28, is fastened to the lid Ill, and
which lies on the same line with the carrying pins I I.
The lever I8 carries a closing lever 2| on its lower end projecting somewhat beyond the lid and the door casing. The lever "2| is fitted with an extension 22 which carries a web 23. In order to keep the lid in closing position, the web '23 is moved behind a nose 2t provided therefor on the lower coke oven door frame 4 below the leveling hole door casing I3.
At the outer end of the lever 2| is situated a web 25 for engagement by the device for opening the leveling hole lid 9.
The apparatus according to Figures 3 and 4 works principally as follows:
In order toopen the leveling hole, first move the lever 2| in such a manner that the web 23 lies outside the range of the nose 28. Then the operating lever I8 is turned around the centre of the shaft I8. At the beginning of this movement of lever I8, the lid I8 together with the affixed refractory liner I2 is withdrawn from the leveling hole 8 in an essentially horizontal direction. During this and the following moving period of the lever I 8, the lid I0 maintains practically its position towards the vertical direction as shown on the drawings, i. e., the lid moves or swings relatively to the lever I8 around the axis of the pins I4, I9, i. e., the lower end of lever I8 moves away to the left of ID until I8 is at right angles .to lid I8, the latter hanging down pendant fashion but in its original position with respect to the vertical thatit must have for sealing the door opening. In this position, the lid is moved upwards so faruntil it lies outside the range of the leveling hole 8 so that the leveling beam may be introduced into the leveling hole might become loosened each time when opening the closure since it does not rest any more on the lower brick holders ll,,but it is situated beit is also possible to arrange the leveling hole and its casing as a part of the coke oven door proper.
The invention is not limited in all its aspects I to the mode of carrying it out as described and shown, since it may be variously embodied within the scope of the following claims.
I claim: 1. Coke oven 'leveler door construction com prising .a leveler door frame, a door-lid therefor,
a hinged lever for moving said door lid into and out of closing position with the ,leveler door frame, said lever being hinged above the door lid and extending downwardly therefrom over the outside of the lid to press the lid in closed position and latch means below the lid for securing the lever and lid in closed position, t 1e lid being connected with the hinged lever only at a point above the vertical center of the lid by means of a pivotal connection so as to have the lid swin pendantly from the lever .in the original position I of the lid to the vertical during opening and closi-ng movements of the lever.
2. Leveling hole closure for horizontal chamber ovens for the production of gas and coke, comprising a substantially vertically disposed closing lid connected to a hinge which hinge is mounted to swing about a horizontal axis, said lid having on its inner side a retainer for a re doorway; characterized by the lid being pivotally connected with the hinge and with the operating lever so as to'hang pendantly therefrom in its original position for closingand thereby sustain the liner plug on its retainer "in their normal position to the vertical during the rest of the lifting and lowering positions of the operating lever, said operating lever extending downwardly over the lid in closed position, and latching means cooperating with the operating lever to hold the lever and lid in closed position.
