through which a pusher ram enters thereinto for forcing and Vdelivering the coke from the chamber through the discharge opening from the oven.
The gases distilled off during the coking process, as is well known, constitute a very valuable by-product and for this reason, it is important that the openings in the opposed ends of the coke oven chamber betigh-tly sealed.
Various types of doorsand closures' have been suggested and used for closing these openings. While several of these doors have been successful in their use, they were usually complicated and expensive in their construction. Also, the doors'heretoore used were necessarily heavy and cumbersome and usually necessitated the use of mechanism, such as door extractors, to remove the doors from and replace them over the openings of the oven. AIn the practice in the past, it
was necessary rst to remove the door from the l opening and to hold it while the coke was pushed from .the oven. Thus,- it will be seen that this practice not only consumed an excessive amount of time, but mechanism, such as a door extractor in addition to the pusher ram was necessary to remove and hold the door while the pusher ram removed the coke from the oven. Furthermore, tarry vapors distilled oi the coal during the coking process condensed to a certain extent and` deposited along the inner edges of the door and the frame, which eventually affected the seal therebetween and necessitated frequent cleaning of,the tar deposit from the door and the frame which had partly become carburized and thus became diicult to rembve.
Also, most doors heretofore suggested and used employed a complicated locking mechanism for locking the same in place which was oftentimes not only diflicult to manipulate but also expensive in its construction and usually required additional tools for actuating the same.
In the present invention, there is provided an improved self-sealing coke oven door which is disposed within the oven chamber at all times and made a part of the pusher-ram when it is in operation eliminatlngthe need for any additional door removing mechanism, such as a door extractor, and at the same time, a door construction which eliminates any tar deposit remaining thereon and consequent carburization, as such deposit is automatically burned oil the door as it passes through the oven chamber after each charge has been processed.
Accordingly, it is one of the objects of the present invention to provide an improved coke oven door which is simple andinexpensive in its construction and, at the same time, one which is effective' and more eiiicient than any coke oven door heretofore proposed. v
It is -another object of the invention to provideA an improved coke oven door which is disposed wi-th the coke oven chamber and made a part of the pusher ram during Ithe removal of the coke from the oven.
It is a further object of the invention to provide an improved coke oven door which is selfsealing and electively seals the opening against leakage at all times.
It is stillanother object of the invention to provide an improved coke oven door having a simple and inexpensive locking means incorporated therewith thereby eliminating such comt plicated locking mechanism as heretofore used on such doors.
Various other Vobjects and advantages of this v invention will be more apparent in the course of the following specification and will be'particularly pointed lout in the appended claims.

Referring more particularly to the drawings, there is shown in Figure 1 a coke oven consisting of a substantially rectangular-shaped longitudinally extending chamber 2 having a discharge opening 3 arranged at the rear end thereof'for discharging the coke therefrom and an opening 4 arranged at the opposite end thereof in the front side of the oven through which the pusher ram (shown in broken lines) is adapted to move to force the coke from the oven with which the improved door of my invention is shown incorporated for the purpose of illustration.
According to the present invention, there is arranged within the oven chamber for closing the opening 4 in the front side thereof, a door 5 which consists of a rigid rectangular-shaped metallic plate-like member or casting 6 which is slightly smaller than the rectangular cross-section of the oven chamber: There is arranged on the inner side of thev plate member 6 substantially centrally thereof, in any suitable manner, preferably a vertically extending reenforcing I- beam member 'I or any other suitable type of stiening member around which a suitable refractory lining 8 is disposed. 'I'here is arranged on the outer side of the plate member 6 in a suitable manner, preferably by means of welding, a metallic plate-like diaphragm 9, preferably made of relatively thin steel which is preferably spaced from the outer surface of the plate-like member 6 by horizontally extending spaced apart raised portions I integrally arranged with the 0n line VII--VII plate member 6 on the outer side thereof. There is arranged on the outer surface of the diaphragm 9 around the edges thereof and attached thereto in any suitable manner, preferably by means of welding; a sealing member I2 which is T-shaped in the present instance, but it will be understood that this sealing member may be made of angle-iron or any other suitable structural shape. The outer or sealing edge of the sealing member I2 has preferably a knife-like edge portion I3 for a purpose hereinafter to be described. To offset any warping of the casting 6, the diaphragm 9 may be adjusted in relation to the casting 6 by means of a plurality of set screws or wedges (not shown), so that the diaphragm 9 may be maintained straight in relation to the oven frame Il, at all times, thereby providing a uniform, tight fitting bearing of the sealing member I2 against the oven frame I'I. There is also carried by the diaphragm 9 preferably just inside of the vertical sealing member I2 along the opposite vertical sides of the door, a plurality of spaced apart hook-like lugs I4 which extend outwardly from the outer surface to which they are suitably attached preferably by means of welding. I'he inner surfaces of each of the end portions of each of the lugs are substantially wedge-shaped and are tapered downwardly and outwardly as at I for a purpose later to be described. There is also attached to the outer surface of the diaphragm 9 substantially centrally thereof, preferably a pair of attaching members or lugs I6 to which the pusher ram is adapted to be removably attached for manipulating the door and to remove the coke from the oven chamber.
There is arranged around the opening 4 in the front side of the oven, a metallic frame I1 which consists preferably of a structural member having substantially a U-shaped cross-section arranged around the opening in the front wall of the furnace which is held in place against the oven brickwork preferably by buckstays I8 which bear against an outwardly extending flange I 9 carried by the U-shaped frame members. There is also carried by the U-shaped frame members an inwardly extending flange portion 20 having preferably a plurality of openings 2l arranged along the vertical inner edges thereof and spaced apart a distance substantially equal to the distance apart of the hook-like lugs I4 carried by the diaphragm 9 of the door with which they are adapted to cooperate. 'I'here is arranged on the outer surface of the flanges 20 immediately below each of the openings I4 therein, a boss portion 22 having an outer tapered surface 23 preferably corresponding to the inner tapered surface I5 of the hook-like lugs I4 with which thev are adapted to cooperate.
The improved door of my invention operates in the following manner:
It will be understood that the complete door 5 is adapted to be part of the pusher ram when the pusher ram forces the coke from the oven. That is, the door is the end portion of the pusher ram and bears directly against the coke in discharging the same from the oven chamber. 'I'he end of the pusher ram is attached to the attaching lugs I6 arranged on the front side of the door as shown in Figure 4 of the drawings, and the pusher ram mechanism moves the door upwardly so that the inner tapered portions I5 of th'e hook-like lugs I4 are lifted out of contact with the outer tapered portions 23 of the boss portions 22 carried by the frame. 'I'hat is, the door is moved to its extreme upper position as shown in Figure 4 of the drawings. The pusher ram is then moved longitudinally of the oven chamber and passes through' the opening 4 in the front side of the oven and through the oven chamber carrying with it the door 5 which forces the coke from the oven through the discharge opening 3 in the opposite end thereof and moves to a position substantially as shown in the broken lines of Figure 1 of the drawings.
After the coke has been removed from the oven, the movement of the pusher ram together with the door carried on the end thereof, is reversed and moves back through the oven chamber to its initial position as shown in Figure 4. As the door 5 reaches the front side of the oven, the hook-like lugs carried by the diaphragm of the door pass through the openings 2I arranged in the opposed edges of the flanges 20 of the frame. When the door reaches this position, it is then moved downwardly by the pusher ram mechanism and the inner tapered portions I5 of the lugs I4 contact the outer tapered portions 23 of the boss portions 22 thereby forcing the knifelike edge portions I3 of the sealing members I2 against th'e inner surface of the flange 2U carried by the frame so as to completely seal the opening against leakage and at the same time securely locking the door in place over the opening, as shown in Figure 3 of the drawings. That is to say, the end portions of the hook-like lugs cooperate with the boss portions below the openings arranged in the frame and tend, through a camming action, to securely lock the door in place over the opening and it is securely held in locked position due primarily to its own weight as shown in Figures 3 and 5 0f the drawings.
It will be seen that such a construction permits the use ofA a smaller or shorter door than any door disposed on the outside of the frame.
In using the door of the construction of the present invention, the oven chamber is not completely filled, but an empty space must necessarily be provided above th'e layer of coal in thechamber so as to permit the free escape of gases which are being distilled off the coal during the processing and also to permit leveling of the coal to a uniform depth throughoutl the chamber as is well known to those skilled in the art. In the present construction, it is preferable that there is -arranged with th'e frame l1 and in the front side of the oven wall above the door 5, an opening 24 which is closed preferably by a suitable door 25 carried by the frame. It will be understood that the leveling bar is inserted through the'opening 24 into the upper part of the oven chamber to level the coal therein to a uniform depth as desired.
As a result of my invention, it will be seen that there is provided a door of a simple and inexpensive construction which effectively seals the front side of the opening on the oven chamber against the leakage, thereby preventing the escape of the valuable ley-product gases therefrom. It will also be seenthat my improved door is self-sealing, and self-locking, thereby eliminating the need for any auxiliary sealing means and any expensive locking mechanism. It will also be seen that the door of the present invention becomes a part of the pusher ram when the coke is being removed from the oven and acts to push the coke therefrom thereby dispensingwith any additional means for holding or supporting the door While the coke is being removed from the oven chamber. It Will be seen further th'at the knife-like edges I3 of the sealing members l2 permit substantially a point contact and tend to cut and eliminate any deposit accumulated on the inner sides of the ange 20 of the frame to provide a perfect seal. Furthermore, if the door frame is uneven, the diaphragm, due to its flexibility, will yield and the sealing members will not become distorted or damaged.
While I have shown and described in this application an embodiment of my invention, it will be understood that this embodiment is merely for the purpose of illustration and description and that various other f orms may be devised Within the scope of the invention, as defined in the appended claims.v
I claim:
1. In combination with a coke oven having a discharge 'opening arranged at one end thereof for discharging the coke therefrom and an opening arranged at the opposite end thereof in the front side of the oven, a door arranged Within the oven chamber for closing said opening in the front side thereof, a frame arranged around said front opening, a ange carried by said frame extending transversely of said opening whereby the removal of the door from the oven is opposed, means carried by said door which is adapted to cooperate with said flange to securely seal said front opening against leakage, and means for locking said door securely in engagement with said frame, said door adapted to be moved through the oven chamber so as to force the coke therefrom through the discharge opening in the opposite end thereof.

In combination with a coke oven having a discharge opening arranged at one end thereof for discharging the coke therefrom and an opening arranged at the opposite end thereof in the front side of the oven, .a door arranged within the oven chamber for closing said opening in the front side thereof, a frame arranged 'around said front opening, a diaphragm arranged on the outer side of said door, means carried -by said diaphragm which is adapted to cooperate with said frame to securely seal said front opening against leakage, and means for locking said door securely in engagement with said frame, said door adapted to be moved through the oven chamber so as to force the coke therefrom through the discharge opening in the opposite end thereof.
3. In combination with a coke oven having a discharge opening arranged at one end thereof for discharging the coke therefrom and an opening arranged at the opposite end thereof in the front side of the oven, a door arranged within g the oven chamber for closing said opening in ber so as to force the coke therefrom through l the discharge opening in the opposite end thereof.
4. In combination with a coke oven having a discharge opening arranged at one end thereof for discharging the coke therefrom and an opening arranged at the opposite end thereof in the front side of the oven, a door arranged within the oven chamber for closing said opening in the front side thereof, a frame arranged around the outer side of said front opening, a plate-like diaphragm arranged on the outer side of said door, means carried by said diaphragm which is adapted to cooperate with said frame to securely seal said front opening againstleakagel a plurality of hook-like lugs arranged along the opposed sides of said door with the inner surface of the end portion of each of them tapered outwardly,
and a corresponding number of boss portions arranged on the outer side of said frame opposite said hook-like lugs with each having an outer tapered surface corresponding to the inner tapered surface of the end portion of said lugs, the end portion of the hook-like lugs adapted to cooperate with the boss portions arranged on said frame to' lock the door securely in engagement with said frame, said door adapted to be moved through the oven chamber so as to force the coke y therefrom through the discharge opening in the opposite end thereof.
5. In combination with a coke oven having a discharge opening arranged at one end thereof for discharging the coke therefrom and an opening arranged at the opposite endthereof in the front side of the oven, a door arranged within the oven chamber for closing said opening in the front side thereof, said door consisting of a rigid inner metallic member having a refractory lining arranged on the inner side thereof, a platelike diaphragm arranged on the outer side of said rigid inner metallic member, a frame arranged around the outer side of said front opening, means arranged around the edges of said diaphragm which is adapted to cooperate with said frame to securely seal said front opening against leakage, and means carried by said door which is adapted to cooperate with means carried by said frame for locking said door securely in engagement therewith, said door adapted to be moved through the oven chamber so as to force the coke therefrom through the discharge opening in the opposite end thereof.

The combination as defined in claim 5 wherein the means for locking said door securely in engagement with said frame consists of a plurality of spaced apart hook-like members arranged along the edges of said door which are adapted to extend through openings arranged in said frame and cooperate with a corresponding number of boss portions arranged on the outer side of said frame.

In combination with a coke oven having a discharge opening arranged at one end thereof for discharging the coke therefrom and an opening arranged in the opposite end thereof in the front side of the oven, a door arranged within the oven chamber for closing said opening in the front side thereof, said door consisting of a rigid inner metallic member having a refractory lining arranged on the inner side thereof, a platelike diaphragm arranged on the outer side of said rigid inner metallic member, a frame arranged around the outer side of said front opening having an inwardly f extending flange integrally arranged therewith therearound, means arranged around the edge of said plate-like dlaphragm having a knife-like edge which is adapted to cooperate with the inwardly extending ange of said frame to securely seal said front opening against leakage, and means carried by said door which is adapted to cooperate with means carried by said ange for locking said door securely in engagement therewith, said door adapted to be moved through the oven chamber so as to force the coke therefrom through the discharge opening in the opposite end thereof.

In combination with a coke oven having a` discharge opening arranged at one end thereof for discharging the coke therefrom and an opening arranged in theopposite end thereof in the front side ofn the oven, a door arranged within the oven chamber for closing said opening in the front side thereof, said door consisting of a rigid inner metallic member having a refractory 1ining arranged on the inner side thereof, a platelike diaphragm arranged on -the outer side of said rigid inner metallic member, a frame arranged around the outer side of said front opening having an inwardly extending flange integrally arranged therewith therearound, means arranged around the edge of said plate-like diaphragm having a knife-like edge which is adapted to cooperate with the inwardly extending flange of said frame to securely seal said front opening against leakage, a plurality of spaced apart hook-like lugs carried by said diaphragm and extending outwardly therefrom, said hook-like lugs adapted to extend beyond the flange carried by said frame and to cooperate with a corresponding number of boss portions arranged on the outer side of said ange for locking said door securely in engagement therewith, said door adapted to be moved through the oven chamber so as to force the coke therefrom through a discharge opening in the opposite end thereof.

In combination with a coke oven having a discharge opening arranged at one end thereof for discharging the coke therefrom and an opening arranged at the opposite end thereof in the front side of the oven, a door arranged within the oven chamber for closing said opening in the front side thereof, a frame arranged around said front opening, a ange carried by said frame extending transversely of said opening whereby the removal of the door from the oven is opposed, means carried by' said door which is adapted to cooperate with said ange to securely seal said front opening against leakage, means for locking said door securely in engagement with said frame, said door adapted to be moved through the oven chamber so as to force the coke therefrom through the discharge opening in the opposite end thereof, and means carried by the front side of said door for holding and supporting the same while it is being moved through the oven chamber.

In combination with a coke oven having a discharge opening` arranged at one end thereof for discharging the coke therefrom and an opening arranged at the opposite end thereof in the front side of the oven, a door arranged within the oven chamber for closing said opening in the front side thereof, means carried by said door which is adapted to cooperate with means carried by said oven around the opening in the front side thereof for sealing the same against leakage, cooperable means arranged on the outer side of said door and the inner side of said front opening for locking the door in position thereover consisting of a plurality of hook-like lugs arranged along the opposed sides of said door with f the inner surface of the end portion of each of them tapered outwardly, and a corresponding number of boss portions arranged on the outer side of said opening opposite said hook-like lugs vwith each having an outer tapered surface corresponding to the inner tapered4 surface of the end portion of said lugs, the end portion of the hook-like lugs adapted to cooperate with the boss portions arranged on said frame to lock the door securely in position over said opening, said` door adapted to be moved through the oven chamber so as to force the coke therefrom through the discharge opening in the opposite end thereof.
