Referring to the drawings in detail, 5 indicates a sliding door and particularly the inner face thereof, while 6 indicates a j amb on the door frame.

A combined latch and handle is indicated generally at 17, and is formed of a strap of metal formedin open rectangular configuration having an extension 18 at one end and inwardly projecting bar 19 at its other end extending through the plate 7. The threaded arm 19 is connected to the underface of the plate 7 by means of anut 2O counter-sunk in the innerfaceof the door .5. j The inner side 21 of the combination handle and latch member 17 is slidablyconfined within the guide 15 and is rockably mounted on the plate? by means of the projecting arm 19. j

A forked spring 22 is mounted on the outer face of the plateT, having one leg 23 within the guide 16 by having the inner end thereof wrapped around thebolt 11 as at 2iand the end of the other leg 25 is movably confined within the guide 16 in abutting relation to one edge of the inner side2l ofthe combined handle and latch member .17, whereby the member 17 is normally projected downwardly against the action of the spring. Since an .operatingrod26 extends through the door 5, the plate 7 and the inner end thereofextend through the guide strap 9 whereupon the operating rod ls rotatable therein. The outer end" 27 ofthe. operating rod projects out-q wardl y from the outer face of thedoor and is threaded to receive a pair of nuts 28, 29, 'between which is secured rigidly to therod 26, an extension 30 projecting inwardly from the LIN-shaped handle 31. 1 v a The other leg 32 or the handle'adjacent the lower end thereofis provided with an opening 33,for the purpose presentlyto be mentioned. . p .in the guide, a forkeds rin secured to the pie 34, which is rigidly secured to the door 5 by meansof a bolt 35 adjacent the other end thereof, and the hasp is formed with a right angled outwardly projecting arm 36, having 5 an opening 37 which registers with the opening 33, to receive a padlock 38, which when in locked relation prevents the movement of the handle 31 with respect to the hasp 34.
Rigidly connected to the operating rod 26 by welding or other well .known means is a cam arm 39, mounted in the guideway 16. The ed e of the cam arm 39 abuts against the edge 0 the side 21 opposed to the spring leg 25, whereby the operation of the rod 26, by the handle 31', will move the member 17 against the action of the spring leg 25.
In the application of the device to the sliding door as shown in Figures 1 and 2, the keeper member indicated generally at i0 is I mounted directly on the door 'j'amb 6 in a alone parallel to the sliding movement of the 00: 5, whereas in Figures 3 and 4 with the keeper indicated generally at 40, the same is attached to swinging doors, and the keeper is dis at ri t angles to its position for 51' doors. he keeperis the same whether had or slidin or swinging doors and consists of a flat-plate 41, having an outwardly jecting arm 42 and an outwardly inclinmg extension 43 formed on the end of the arm. The keeper plate 41 is secured to the enter face-of the door j amb 6 for sliding doors illustrated in Figures 1 and 2, by means of ms 44 and 45', but when used for swingin; doors, as illustrated in Figures 3 and 4,
the keeper is secured by the same means to a block 6' on the door jamb. When the exten: sion 1'8 strikes the extension 43 on the keeper, the combination latch and handle rides upwardly on the same and seats itself between the keeper-plate 41 and the arms 42. To detech the extension 18 from the keeper 40, either the handle 31 on the outside orthe combined latch and handle 17 on the inside "45 of the door may be turned whereby the extension 18' is moved inan are free of the kee r. A door lock of the character referred to comprising a fiat plate adapted to be rigidlysecured on the inner s ideof a door, a yoke shaped guide strap mounted on the outer face of the plate, a combined latch and handle rookably mounted on the plate andslidable in the guide, a forked spring having one leg rigidly secured to the plate and the other in abutment with said combined latch and handle, a keeper adapted to be mounted on a door jainb, and having an arm projecting cutwardly for engagement with said combined latch and handle, an operating rod adapted to extendthrough the door and having its innor end rotatably supported by said plate and guide strap and its outer end terminating exteriorly of the outer face of the door, a cam arm rigidly mounted on said rod between said plate and guide strap and abutting said com bined latch and handle, an abutment rigidly secured to said plate to limit the movement of said cam, a hasp adapted to be rigidly secured to the outer side of said door, a second handle rigidly secured {to the operating rod for rotating the latter, and detachable means connected with the hasp and handle for locking the latter against movement, said combined latch and handle formed of a continuous rim having a side thereof slidable between the guide and plate engaging said keeper arm at its outer end, pivoted at its inner end to said plate and forming a gripper at its other side.
